Description

Gel Stains are heavy-bodied and do not penetrate as deeply into the wood as liquid oil-based stains do. These gel stains provide deep, rich colors more than any of the oil based stain available. Gel Stains are for interior use only.  They have a satin sheen that deepens with extra coats.

When using the gel stains you will need to prepare the bare wood by sanding with a 120-150 grit sandpaper (Be sure not to over sand) Over sanding will close and seal the wood grain, which prevents the ideal color absorption.  Remove the dust with a vacuum, compressed air, tack cloth or damp cloth. Let it dry completely before applying the oil based gel stain. You can apply 1-2 coats of the gel stain to deepen the color.

Make sure your in a well ventilated area before applying the gel. To apply the gel stain wipe it on with a natural bristle brush, foam brush, or paint pad applicator. Stir the stain meticulously  to reincorporate the solids that settle on the bottom of the can. Use Mineral Spirits for the cleanup process.

If  your applying stain over an existing finish, make sure that the finish has dried before applying another coat of stain or topcoat. Depending on the existing finish, Gel Stain can take days to dry. Be patient, and test by rubbing with a white cotton ball or white cloth. If the surface is still tacky or you can remove more than a faint trace of stain, the surface is not ready.

Drying time takes about 8 hours depending on air moisture. For re-coat applications it takes 12-24 hours to dry.

Cure time is 30 days under ideal conditions (70 degrees and 70% humidity). However, this may vary slightly with humidity & temperature. Good ventilation, air movement and higher temperatures will accelerate dry time. Dry time and cure time are totally unrelated. During the curing process protect your flat surfaces and avoid placing any heavy items on horizontal surfaces or sliding anything across the surface.

Clean up is easily accomplished with mineral spirits or waterless hand cleaner like Goop or Gojo. If you have spilled the gel stain , you must clean it immediately while it's still wet. If the oil based gel dries, it will be difficult to clean it off any surface.
