You will use the beginning section as a guide and or reference as you work on the projects. He suggests you experiment and make a few changes to the design pattern to create your own version of the carvings. There is a special section for carving a hummingbird which John guides the carver through the complete carving from start to finish, beginning with layout and transferring the pattern to wood to finishing, and mounting.  The reader will learn all about hand and power tools, and which tools to use for each project including techniques, plus wood selection. Once your project is carved John will guide you through sanding and choice of surface finishes.
