So if you're looking for a fun project that's sure to please, learning how to build a rocking horse is a great place to start.

How To Get Started

Building a wooden rocking horse is a lot like building a rocking chair or anything else that rocks.

The first thing you need to do is pick your set of wooden rocking horse plans. Once you have the plans, your project is one step closer to getting started.

Second, is picking what kind of lumber you plan to use. Some of the plans for a rocking horse may tell you what you need with a lumber list and others will provide full size parts that you will have to measure to create your own list. Consider the benefits of hardwoods compared to softwood. If you want an heirloom, you may just want to build it out of hardwood lumber like oak, or cherry.

Once you have the lumber, read the plans for a rocking horse closely. You'll want to make each part as directed. I prefer to start with the body and save the rocker part for last. Cut and fit each part of the horse together.

Finally cut and build the rockers. Make sure that they are identical from side to side and that they are fitted together from front to back perfectly. If the rockers are not even from front to back, your rocking horse can gallop to one side or the other instead of staying still on the floor.

When you have the horse and rockers built, go ahead and dry fit the horse onto the rocker assembly. Do this by using clamps on each side. Use the same clamps in the same manner on each side front and back. This will distribute the weight like they aren't even there.

Rock the assembly back and forth to see how it rocks. You may have to move the horse itself forward or backward to balance the rocker. If the rocker is edging forward as the horse rocks back and forth, move it back slightly on the rocker assembly. Keep adjusting until it is correct.

Mark where the horse is best balanced on the rocker and go ahead and attach it.

Do your final sanding and get ready to put the final touches on it.
