The male puffs out the feathers on the head increasing the apparent size of the head. The Bufflehead Drake ranges from 13–16" long and weighs up to 1.5 lbs. Females average 14" long and weigh up to 13 oz. Adult males are black and white, with iridescent green and purple heads and a large white patch behind the eye. Females are grey-toned with a smaller white patch behind the eye and a light underside.
