Description

Supermarine Spitfire WWII Fighter Model Airplane Kit with a 27" 5/8" wing span. This is an authentic scale flying model airplane kit. It has been designed to be built as a magnificient static display model, a flying rubber powered, gas free flight or a U-Control model. The Supermarine Spitfire was a British single-seat fighter aircraft that was used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after World War II.

Many variants of the Spitfire were built, using several wing configurations and engines of varying output. It was also produced as a carrier-based aircraft and converted into a jet fighter. The Supermarine Spitfire was the only British fighter to be in continuous production throughout the entirety of the Second World War.

The Supermarine company's founder, R.J. Mitchell, known for his design of racing yachts, began investigating potential designs for aircraft in 1928. He started by looking at how other aircraft companies were making use of new technology like low-drag monocoque hulls and stressed skinning that allow an aircraft to be both strong and light weight at the same time.

In early 1934, he submitted his first design to the Air Ministry, who immediately showed interest and gave Supermarine an order for three prototypes of the new Type 300 aircraft, which would come to be known as the Supermarine Spitfire. The first prototype took to the skies in March 1936 and quickly became one of the most advanced aircraft of its time.

It went on to serve in every theatre of World War II and was flown by many of the Allied nations' top pilots, includingRAF ace Pilot Officer Alan Deereand Poland's Jan Zumbach. It remains one of the most iconic fighter planes ever made and is still flown today by private enthusiasts and heritage air forces around the world.

Supermarine's later work on pressurised cabins led to their successful lineof Seafirecarrier-based fighters which saw action right up until Korea. They also produced some superb postwar racers like the Swiftand Scimitarbefore being absorbed into Vickers in 1961.
